Match Play Format
Match Play is one of golf's oldest and most competitive formats. Instead of counting total strokes for the round, players compete hole-by-hole to win individual holes and ultimately the match.
How Match Play Works
Each hole is a separate contest.
The player or team with the lowest score on a hole wins that hole. If both sides score the same, the hole is halved.
The match continues until one side leads by more holes than remain to be played.
Example:
- 1 Up = leading by one hole
- 2 Up = leading by two holes
- All Square = tied match
- 4 & 3 = match ends with a four-hole lead and only three holes remaining

Handicaps In Match Play
Many match play events use handicaps to create fair competition between players of different skill levels.
The most common approach is to give strokes based on the difference between players' course handicaps.
Local rules vary by club and tournament committee.
