Golf Best Ball Format Guide

Best ball is a team golf format where each player plays their own ball, and the lowest score from the team counts on each hole.

What Is Best Ball In Golf?

Best ball is a golf format where players compete as a team while still playing their own golf ball from tee to green. After the hole is completed, the best score from the team is used as the team score for that hole.

For example, if a two-person team scores 4 and 5 on a hole, the team score is 4. In a four-person best ball event, the lowest score among the four players is counted.

Best ball is popular because it combines individual golf with team scoring. Every player plays their own round, but each team benefits when one player makes a good score.

How Best Ball Works

Unlike a scramble, players do not move their ball to the best shot location. Everyone plays their own ball, and the team score is selected after the hole is finished.

Best Ball Scoring Example

Here is a simple two-person best ball example.

After three holes, the team score is 13.

In a four-person best ball event, the same idea applies, except the lowest score among all four players counts for the team.

Team

Team Best Ball

Players compete as a team while still playing their own golf ball throughout the round.

  • Two-person teams
  • Four-person teams
  • Team leaderboard
  • Individual scores still matter
Gross

Gross Best Ball

Gross best ball uses actual scores without handicap adjustments. This works well for competitive fields and stronger players.

  • Actual scores
  • No handicap strokes
  • Great for club events
  • Simple team scoring
Net

Net Best Ball

Net best ball applies handicap strokes so players of different skill levels can compete fairly in the same event.

  • Handicap adjusted
  • Good for mixed fields
  • Popular with clubs
  • Works for leagues

Gross Best Ball vs Net Best Ball

Best ball can use gross scoring, net scoring, or both. Gross best ball uses each player's actual score. Net best ball applies handicap strokes before selecting the best team score.

Net best ball is especially useful when players of different skill levels are paired together because handicap strokes can keep the match more balanced.

Common Best Ball Options

Best ball can be used as a serious tournament format or as a fun team game for leagues, charity events, member events, and weekend groups.

Best Ball vs Scramble

Best ball and scramble are both team formats, but they are not the same. In a scramble, players choose the best shot and everyone plays from that selected location. In best ball, every player plays their own ball for the full hole.

Best ball keeps more individual golf involved, while scramble formats usually create a faster, more relaxed team experience.

Best Ball vs Better Ball

Best ball and better ball are often used to describe similar formats, especially in two-person team events. In many golf groups, “better ball” means the lower score of two partners counts on each hole.

The important thing is to define the rule clearly before the event begins: how many players are on each team, how many scores count, and whether the event is gross, net, or both.
