Custom Golf Tournament Formats
Not every golf tournament fits a standard template. GolfToon is being built to support real formats used by real clubs, leagues, friend groups, charity events, and tournament directors.
If Your Tournament Exists, We'll Try To Build It
Many clubs and golf groups run events with their own scoring rules, team structures, flights, skins, side games, tie-breakers, points systems, handicap formulas, or local traditions.
GolfToon is already running custom formats successfully, and we are continuing to build around the way golfers actually organize events.

What Is A Custom Golf Tournament Format?
A custom golf tournament format is any event that does not fit neatly into a standard format like stroke play, scramble, match play, best ball, or skins. These events often combine several formats or add special local rules.
Examples include rotating partners, custom points races, modified Stableford, multi-day team events, Ryder Cup style competitions, local side games, mixed gross and net scoring, unique handicap calculations, or special prize divisions.
These are the tournaments that often get managed with spreadsheets, paper notes, text messages, and manual math. GolfToon is being built to make those events easier to run.

Support for events that do not follow standard stroke play or scramble scoring.
Team Formats
Partner events, team totals, scramble teams, best ball, and custom group scoring.

League Rules
Weekly formats, points systems, season standings, rotating partners, and league-specific rules.
Flights & Handicaps
Flexible flighting, handicap methods, gross and net divisions, and event-specific scoring adjustments.
Multi-Day Events
Support for events that span multiple rounds, days, formats, teams, or divisions.
Examples Of Custom Golf Formats
- Rotating partner events: Players switch partners during the event while keeping individual points.
- Ryder Cup style events: Teams compete across multiple sessions and match formats.
- Modified Stableford: Players earn points based on birdies, pars, bogeys, or custom scoring values.
- Quota games: Players try to beat a personal point target based on handicap or ability.
- Team points races: Teams earn points across holes, matches, days, or rounds.
- Hybrid scramble formats: Scramble on some holes, best ball on others, or rotating formats by nine.
- Custom skins games: Gross skins, net skins, team skins, carryovers, or no-carryover rules.
- Multi-day club trips: Different formats each day with an overall champion.
Custom Scoring Rules
Golf groups often create scoring rules that make perfect sense locally but are difficult to fit into standard tournament software.
- Win, loss, and tie points
- Bonus points for low gross or low net
- Team points and individual points in the same event
- Hole-by-hole scoring
- Round-by-round totals
- Flight-specific leaderboards
- Custom tie-breakers
- Manual adjustments or committee decisions
GolfToon is being built with flexibility in mind so custom scoring can grow into the platform over time.
Custom Handicap Methods
Many tournaments use handicap methods that are specific to their group, course, or event tradition. Some use official-style allowances, while others use simpler formulas that are easier for casual golfers to understand.
- Full course handicap
- Percentage handicap allowances
- Combined team handicap formulas
- Scramble handicap formulas
- League-only handicaps
- Manual handicap adjustments
- Gross-only divisions
- Separate gross and net awards
Custom Formats For Leagues, Clubs, And Golf Trips
Custom formats are especially common in recurring groups. A weekly league might rotate formats every week. A men’s club might use a points race. A golf trip might combine teams, individual standings, skins, and daily prizes.
GolfToon is designed to grow around those real-world use cases instead of forcing every event into one rigid scoring model.
- Men’s club events
- Ladies league nights
- Member-guest tournaments
- Member-member events
- Charity tournaments
- Corporate outings
- Weekend groups
- Golf trips and multi-day competitions
How To Describe Your Format To GolfToon
The more clearly you explain your format, the easier it is to determine whether it can be built into GolfToon.
- How many players are in the event?
- Is it individual, team, or both?
- How are teams or partners created?
- What score is entered on each hole?
- How are points or totals calculated?
- Are handicaps used?
- Are there flights or divisions?
- Are there side games such as skins or closest-to-the-pin?
- How are ties handled?
- What should the final leaderboard show?
